Dec 18 USA men fall to Norway in tiebreaker at WWUG

USA men finish fifth after tiebreaker loss at Winter World University Games in Italy

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - 2010 Olympian Chris Plys and the American men will not advance to the playoffs of the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy, after a 4-3 loss this morning in the tiebreaker game with Norway at the Baselga di Pine Ice Stadium.

Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Sean Beighton (Seattle), Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), and Tom Howell (Brick, N.J.) scored a single point in the third end and gave up two steals that allowed Norway's Markus Hoeiberg rink (6-4) to take a 3-1 advantage late in the game. The Americans (5-5) tied the game in the ninth end but were not able to steal the 10th. Norway clinched the win by scoring a single point to advance to the semifinals. Norway will now play Sweden (8-1) while Canada (7-2) takes on Great Britain (6-3) in the other men's playoff. 

The U.S. ladies, led by Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.), finished in eighth place. Russia (9-0) will play Great Britain (6-3) and Switzerland (7-2) takes on Korea (6-3) in the women's semifinals tomorrow.
